Among the 64 Thiruvilaiyadals performed by Lord Somasundarar of Madurai, one is enshrined here at Oriyur: the young Shiva, appearing as a divine child (Balar) in the arms of Goddess Gowri. This sacred play is recorded in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, and is echoed again by Saint Manikkavasagar in the Thiruvasagam's Keerthi Thiruvagaval — a rare double distinction that marks Oriyur as both a Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam sthalam and a Thiruvasaga Vaippu sthalam.

These literary references make clear that a renowned Shiva temple stood here and was worshipped by the people of Oriyur in Manikkavasagar's own time. Yet over the passing centuries, the temple itself disappeared — remembered only through the Sivagangai Theertham, the sacred tank that remained on this ground as a silent witness to its history.

The temple's revival began when the thought was planted in the hearts of devotees through the Bangalore-based Aandra Arasu Uzhavara Thirupani Kuzhu. That seed grew through the boundless devotion of true bhaktas, and with the support of Kovai Aranpani Arakkattalai, Bangalore Karaikal Ammaiyar Arakkattalai and many devotees, a beautiful stone temple now stands once again at Oriyur — with Arulmigu Seyumanar enshrined together with Sri Mattuvarkuzhali Amman.

The Deities

Lord Shiva appears here as Seyumanar — literally "the child" — taking the form of a divine infant to delight Goddess Gowri, just as He once graced Meenakshi Amman in Madurai. Goddess Mattuvarkuzhali Amman, seated beside Him with a young parrot on Her hand, is worshipped here as Oriyur's own Meenakshi.

பாண்டிய நாட்டிலே மதுரை சோமசுந்தரக் கடவுள் நிகழ்த்தியருளிய 64 திருவிளையாடல்களில், விருத்த குமார பாலரான திருவிளையாடல் நிகழ்ந்தேறிய திருத்தலம் ஆனபடியால் இத்தலம் திருவிளையாடற் புராணத் தலமாயிற்று. மணிவாசகப் பெருமான் திருவாசகம், கீர்த்தித் திருவகவலில் இதனைக் குறித்துள்ளமையால் இத்தலம் திருவாசக வைப்புத்தலம் என்னும் சிறப்பினையும் உடைத்தாயிற்று.

இவ்வகை இலக்கியச் சான்றுகளால், ஓரியூரில் மாணிக்க வாசகர் காலத்தில் மக்கள் வழிபட்ட புகழ் பெற்ற சிவனார் திருக்கோயில் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற குறிப்பு திண்ணமாகப் பெறப்படுகிறது. இதற்குச் சான்றாக இன்றும் சிவகங்கைத் தீர்த்தம் என்னும் திருக்குளம் மட்டும் நிலாவி நின்று, வரலாற்றை வாய்ச்சொல்லின்றியே விளம்புகிறது.

காலம் கனிந்தது. பெங்களூரைச் சேர்ந்த ஆண்ட அரசு உழவாரத் திருப்பணிக் குழு சிவனடியார்கள் அறிவிலே காணாது போன கோயிலைக் குறித்த கருத்தினை விதைத்தான் கண்டம்கறுத்தான். வித்து முளை விட்டது. கோவை அரன்பணி அறக்கட்டளை, பெங்களூர் காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் அறக்கட்டளை மற்றும் பல அடியார்கள் அன்பர்களின் கரங்களால் திருப்பணி கொண்டு, இன்று மீண்டும் ஒரு கவின் மிகு கற்றளியில் அருள்மிகு சேயுமானார் மட்டுவார்குழலி அம்மையுடன் எழுந்தருளியுள்ளார்.

சிவனார், தானே சேயாக (குழந்தையாக) அருட் திருமேனி தாங்கி, கௌரியம்மைக்கு அருள் பாலித்த திருவிளையாடலைப் பறைசாற்றும் முகமாக, இன்றும் தன்னைத் தேடி வந்து வணங்கும் அன்பர்களுக்கு குழந்தை வரத்தினை அள்ளி வழங்கி அருள் பாலித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சேயுமானார் பெருமான். மதுரையில் அரசாண்ட மீனாட்சி அம்மையின் திருவுருத் தாங்கி, கையில் பேசும் இளங்கிளியுடன் அழகுப் பெட்டகமாக அருள் பாலிக்கும் மடக்கிளியாய் மட்டுவார் குழலி அம்மை; அவளே ஓரியூரின் மீனாட்சி.
